Kimberly Baum is an emerging artist working from her home studio in rural Eastern Oregon. Her creative practice focuses on confronting the religious trauma she experienced throughout adolescence and young adulthood. She draws inspiration from colors, textures, fabric and found objects that remind her of her own childhood and the unbridgeable divide she felt between her secular and faith communities. Using handicrafts that are closely associated with domesticity, femininity and traditional gender roles such as embroidery, quilting and crochet she subverts the purpose of these tasks to create abstract soft sculptures. Her sculptures give physical form to her complex emotions about her role and worth as a woman.
